  1. 1. (15 pts.). Explain evolutionary theory according to Darwin. Darwin was forced to publish because he discovered that his theories were similar to those of Alfred Russel Wilson and he knew he might not be the first to put forth his ideas if he did not act.  Compare Darwin’s theories and ideas to the ideas of Alfed Russel Wallace in his paper: On the Tendency of Varieties to Depart Indefinitely from the Original Type (1858). The article is located in the file’s directory. Darwin was a child of privilege, and his naturalistic worldview was shaped accordingly, while Wallace’s own struggling middle-class background provided a lens with less rigid understanding of science.  As a result, while Darwin included him in a joint publication, they differed in perspective, practice, and philosophy.
  2. (15 pts.). Titchener’s behavior toward women in Psychology was contradictory, in that he sometimes supported and sometimes impeded their professional growth. Please discuss this contradiction using the information from lecture notes, the textbook, other resources and the following academic journal to support your discussion:  Titchener, women psychologists, and the experimentalists.
